Central Alberta Business Leaders Discuss Budget 2026 with Minister Nate Horner
Central Alberta Business Leaders Discuss Budget 2026 with Minister Nate Horner
On March 3rd the Red Deer District Chamber convened Central Alberta’s business community for a post-budget conversation with Alberta’s Minister of Finance, Nate Horner.
Budgets shape the environment businesses operate in every day. Conversations like this ensure Central Alberta’s employers have a voice in the policies that impact investment, growth, and opportunity in our region.
More than 75 leaders from local government, community organizations, and Chamber member businesses gathered to hear directly from the Minister about Budget 2026 and to ask questions about what the province’s fiscal decisions mean for employers, investment, and economic growth in Central Alberta.
Minister Adriana LaGrange, MLA for Red Deer South, along with Jason Stephan, MLA for Red Deer North, and Jennifer Johnson, MLA for Lacombe–Ponoka, also joined the discussion.
Minister Horner opened the event with a brief overview of Alberta’s fiscal outlook before participating in a moderated fireside-style conversation with attendees, providing an opportunity for local leaders to raise questions and perspectives directly with provincial decision-makers.
A Budget Shaped by Rapid Growth
A key theme throughout the discussion was the extraordinary pace of population growth in Alberta and the pressures it is placing on infrastructure, health care, and education.
Budget 2026 projects a $9.4 billion deficit, driven largely by investments required to keep pace with that growth. Minister Horner emphasized that the government’s focus is on maintaining Alberta’s competitive advantage while managing spending responsibly.
He highlighted several fiscal strengths that continue to distinguish Alberta nationally, including:
- Canada’s lowest corporate tax rate at 8%
- One of the lowest net-debt-to-GDP ratios in the country, forecast at approximately 10.5%
- A long-term strategy to strengthen Alberta’s fiscal resilience through continued growth of the Heritage Savings Trust Fund
Investments Impacting Central Alberta
Several major investments highlighted in the provincial budget will have direct implications for the Red Deer region and the broader Central Alberta economy, including:
- Continued progress on the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre redevelopment
- Expansion of the Red Deer Regional Airport
- Investments supporting Red Deer Polytechnic’s CIM-TAC expansion and collegiate model
- Broader provincial capital investments in schools, health-care facilities, and transportation infrastructure
Minister LaGrange noted that health infrastructure investments in Red Deer represent one of the largest health capital commitments currently underway in Alberta, reflecting the city’s growing role as a regional health and service hub.
Business Leaders Raise Regional Issues
Following the presentation, the floor opened for questions from attendees, leading to a wide-ranging discussion on issues affecting businesses and communities across Central Alberta.
Topics raised by participants included:
- Electricity distribution policy and its impact on municipalities and ratepayers
- Strategies to diversify Alberta’s economy and support emerging sectors
- Physician recruitment and health-care workforce capacity
- Infrastructure pressures created by rapid population growth
- The province’s long-term fiscal strategy and the role of the Heritage Fund
Ensuring the Business Voice Is Heard
Events like this reinforce the value of direct dialogue between government and the business community. By bringing decision-makers and employers together, the Chamber helps ensure that the experiences and perspectives of local businesses are part of the policy conversation.
As Central Alberta continues to grow, these conversations will remain critical to shaping policies that support investment, competitiveness, and long-term regional prosperity.
The Red Deer District Chamber remains committed to convening discussions that keep the business voice at the table.
