More Than Meets the Eye: The Businesses That Make Central Alberta

From the businesses we visit every day to the industries working behind the scenes, Central Alberta's business community is more diverse than we might realize.

A morning coffee stop, a local manufacturer supplying customers across the country, an agricultural business preparing for another season or a professional services firm helping other companies grow each plays a different role in the region's business landscape.

Small Business Week, taking place October 19-25, is an opportunity to recognize the businesses that contribute to our communities, create employment and bring ideas to life. It's also a chance to look beyond the businesses we know and appreciate the variety of people, industries and expertise that make up Central Alberta.

A business community with many stories
No two businesses have quite the same story. Some have been part of the community for generations, while others are introducing new ideas, services or ways of doing business. Some serve customers around the corner; others reach markets well beyond Alberta.

The industries themselves are equally varied. Agriculture and agribusiness have a significant presence in the region, alongside manufacturing, construction, transportation, professional services, tourism, technology, retail and more. Many of these businesses also rely on one another, creating relationships and opportunities that extend across industries.

It's this variety that makes getting to know the local business community so interesting. Behind every business is a different combination of experience, expertise, challenges and ambitions.

Recognizing the Work Behind the Business
The work happening across Central Alberta's business community isn't always visible from the outside. Behind every business are people making decisions, solving problems, creating opportunities, supporting their teams and finding ways to move forward.

The Chamber’s annual Business of the Year Awards offer an opportunity to recognize that work and bring some of these stories into the spotlight. This year's awards received more than 80 nominations, with 21 finalists representing businesses across seven categories.

Each nomination offers a glimpse into the contributions businesses are making, to their industries, their employees and the communities they serve. The awards help us recognize not only what these businesses have achieved, but also the work, commitment and people behind those achievements.

Looking beyond our own industry
It's easy to become familiar with the businesses and industries closest to our own work. But learning about other sectors can offer a fresh perspective on the region and the connections between businesses.

Agri-Trade, held annually in Red Deer, is one example of an event that brings an important part of Central Alberta's business landscape into focus. Agriculture involves much more than what happens on the farm; it also connects with equipment, technology, transportation, manufacturing and a wide range of services.

Events that bring industries and people together create opportunities to learn about work happening beyond our usual circles and to discover businesses we might not otherwise encounter.

Get to know your business community
Small Business Week is a timely reminder to take a closer look at the businesses around us. That might mean learning about a company in a different industry, meeting another business owner, attending a local event or discovering a service you didn't know was available right here in Central Alberta.

Through events, member features and initiatives such as the Business of the Year Awards, the Red Deer Chamber helps shine a light on the businesses and people contributing to our region.

Because the more we learn about the businesses around us, the more we see what makes Central Alberta's business community unique.
