Red Deer District Chamber Welcomes Strategic Regional Investments in Provincial Budget 2026

The Red Deer District Chamber (RDDC) identifies Budget 2026 as a pivotal bridge for Central Alberta, securing long-term infrastructure commitments.  The Chamber welcomes major investments in health, transportation, and talent, the projection of a $9.4 billion deficit necessitates a disciplined focus on the “Alberta Tax Advantage” and provincial spending parameters.

“The strategic focus on our hospital, airport and highway networks strengthens our regional corridor” Frank Creasey, Chamber CEO noted.  “However, with annual debt servicing costs projected to reach $3.4 billion by 2028, we must ensure that these fiscal headwinds do not shift the tax burden onto the private sector.”
The Chamber welcomes the restoration of the Grants in Place of Taxes (GIPOT) program to 100 per cent, an important advocacy win that will help prevent property tax shifts onto local businesses. As property tax stability remains a top concern, we urge the province to ensure municipalities have reliable revenue sources so commercial property owners are not the fiscal shock absorber.

The Chamber recognizes several key capital allocations which support the RDDC’s Advocacy Framework:

  • Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre: Included within a $1.34 billion healthcare envelope, the redevelopment and Interim Cardiac Lab represent a generational capacity increase. This ensures the health-system certainty required to support a growing workforce.
  • Highway 11 Twinning: The $62 million commitment to twin Highway 11 west to Rocky Mountain House supports regional traffic flow, enhances commercial safety, and reduces logistical risks for local industry.
  • Red Deer Regional Airport Expansion: The $3 million allocation under the Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program enables local businesses to reach new markets and strengthens Red Deer’s position as a primary investment hub.
  • Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP): The $5 million for the CIM-TAC East Campus Expansion aligns with the Chamber’s "Talent Pipeline Management" priority, allowing employers to co-design training for high-demand roles.
With our focus being on pro-business growth, economic development and fiscal responsibility, we look forward to hosting a local Post-Budget Conversation with Minister Nate Horner on March 3rd to ensure Red Deer remains a leader in Alberta’s economic landscape.
