Statement on the Adoption of an Arm’s-Length Governance Model for Economic Development in Red Deer

The Red Deer District Chamber commends City Council, City Administration, and especially the Ad Hoc Economic Development Committee for their exceptional leadership and commitment to shaping a bold new vision for economic development in Red Deer.

Council’s unanimous decision to adopt an arm’s-length governance model reflects what our business community has long called for: a faster, more innovative, and entrepreneurial approach to economic development. With this model, Red Deer is now positioned to move at the speed of business, and toward a stronger, more competitive, and regionally connected future.

The Chamber was proud to participate in the steering committee that laid the foundation for this work, and we’re pleased to see a model emerge that is reflective of the values and ambitions of local business leaders. The establishment of a new Part 9 non-profit organization, led by a diverse and skilled board, is a critical next step, and we are confident that with continued collaboration, this model will set Red Deer on a path toward long-term economic resilience and competitiveness.

This is what progress looks like when government and business work together with a shared vision: bold ideas become actionable plans. The Chamber stands ready to support the transition, help champion implementation of these recommendations, and continue working with Council and Administration to ensure Red Deer emerges as a leader in regional economic development.
